Roadshow Highway 101-Tully Road and Highway 17 work to end months ahead of sched

q when will construction end at highway 101 and tully road? ... when will the new pavement start to go down on highway 17? the current state of the road between lexington reservoir and the summit has become very rough since construction started a few months ago. driving a car with stiff suspension, like my own, is almost unbearable.

bob brasher, nick george and many more

a i bring really good news. the new tully interchange and work on 17 could be done in may, several months ahead of schedule for both projects, says caltrans.

tully will be seven lanes wide -- three lanes in each direction plus a merging lane. six-foot bike lanes will be striped on the overpass and sidewalks will be widened from 5 to 10 feet. and there will be an extra lane on south 101 to yerba buena road.

the 17 project will improve drainage and repave the section south of summit road with asphalt that will prevent water from pooling on the road. the underground drainage portion is done on 17. caltrans needs to grind and pave in dry, warm weather; hence, burberry borse, the may time frame for both jobs.

q they have installed new signs on almaden expressway increasing the speed limit to 50 mph. what were they thinking? this is a dangerous expressway. in the 15 years i have lived here, there have been at least three fatal pedestrian vs. car accidents, several collisions at almaden and camden avenue and at night the expressway is poorly lit with many turns, making it hard to see in front of you. the 45-mph limit was too fast and 50 is insane.

a the speed limit was raised after traffic studies were conducted. in order to use radar to patrol this road, the limit had to be at the closest 5 mph increment below what 85 percent of motorists are traveling.

q ok, i am not going to complain about the southbound interstate 680 toll lane only because i don't want to burden you any more with that issue. the real problem is on northbound 680 along the sunol grade, and i think i know a way to make it slightly better. many people get off at sheridan road, go down the side of the freeway on mission boulevard and get back on the freeway at andrade road. they seem to think that they save themselves time by doing this, but looking at how traffic flows i think they are the main cause of the problem in the first place. why don't we set up a metering light on the andrade onramp? they could put in a temporary light and see what effect it has for very little cost. it won't make 680 perfect because there is still a merge at the truck scales,a+e interactive archive for godfather 2, but it might just make it a little better.

a metering lights are coming, but installing just one won't do much good. caltrans plans to add meters on all of northbound 680 between the santa clara county line and the contra costa county line from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2013, meaning it will likely be 2014 before the lights are working.

q i saw your article on the changes to the highway 237 carpool lanes. i, and probably others, have a problem with the lack of carpool exits before first street in the westbound direction. my wife and i commute from concord and we use the carpool transition from south i-880 to west 237. i need to exit at first street to drop my wife off at her work, and not having a carpool exit before then causes us problems. i could forego the carpool transition but that would defeat the purpose of carpooling and just add to the traffic backup entering the regular 237 lanes. did caltrans consider that there are carpools that need to exit first street?

dale borja

concord

a yes, both the state and vta knew that carpoolers like you would be inconvenienced by the shortage of exits from the carpool lane. i would stay in the carpool lane and exit at great america, then backtrack to first street. it will add a few minutes to your commute, but i suspect it will still be faster than jumping into the lanes with solo drivers to take the first street exit.

q maybe you can help prevent accidents from occurring on highway 4 westbound near bailey road in bay point. due to the bart center median construction, the lanes just prior to bailey shift right for approximately 50 yards, ghd pas cher, then shift back left. this is on a normally straight section of highway 4. the shift in the lanes is marked by just white botts' dots and lack white striping like the rest of the freeway. on my way home from work every day in the midafternoon, i see near-accidents by drivers who do not see the lane shift. where they are supposed to shift right, they continue straight, which puts them into the lane to their left. the same thing happens when the lanes shift back to the left. cars continue straight, putting them into a different lane which is usually already occupied by other vehicles. with the rainy season finally upon us, visibility will be much worse and the lane shifts will be almost impossible to see. can you please see if caltrans can re-mark the lane shifts with white stripes?

a bart is looking at this and waiting for caltrans to agree to the fix. stay tuned.

q i commute from the tri-valley to downtown oakland daily via interstate 580. i am amazed at how hundreds of vehicles attempt to get onto i-580 at one time at each of the onramps in oakland. why is it that i have to stop at a metering light when i get on in dublin when all of these folks can just clog up the freeway for the vast majority of commuters through oakland? are there plans to add metering lights through this area?

scott mittan

dublin

a this freeway needs metering lights and caltrans has them on its wish list. but alas, there is no funding for this, so it's anyone's guess when meters will be installed. a higher priority is getting meters installed on i-80 east of the bay bridge, with work beginning later this year, and on i-680 over the sunol grade.

q on the ramp from southbound mission boulevard to southbound interstate 880 in fremont, there is a carpool lane approaching the metering lights. but there is no time limit posted on the carpool sign. after 9 a.m. some single passenger vehicles use this carpool lane while other single passenger vehicles avoid it, presuming it is against the law. who is correct?

gopal srinath

fremont

a the solo drivers who avoid this lane. if no hours are listed on carpool signs, then carpool rules are in effect 24/7. this is the case at nearly all onramp carpool lanes from city streets such as mission. freeway-to-freeway carpool connectors such as at 237-880 have hours posted and they usually copy the 5-9 a.m. and 3-7 p.m. restrictions on the freeway.

q i drive the bay bridge every weekday. when traveling through the "s" curve, people are always crossing the white lines to change lanes. why are people changing lanes on a curve?

mike hand

richmond

a beats me. it is legal to cross these white lines as long as it can be done safely. but it's unwise on this stretch, where drivers travel too fast and have so few options if a car in an adjacent lane veers into their path.

q scott macleod's license b8nswch=bait and switch, right? ... must be a used-car salesman. ... b8nswch is a dishonest salesman. probably an appliance salesman. does scott sell fishing bait and rods? ... could be a fisherman who makes a sardine sandwich! ... could scott work for the consumer financial protection agency targeting bait and switch advertisers? ... my guess is that scott drives an unmarked chp or police car; baits speeders and switches places to trap them! wild one but plausible, chaussures nike! ... he works for a sandwich place and b8nswch means bacon sandwich! ... he is a fisherman who believes in "catch and release" if the fish is too small. ... i think the owner is possibly a district attorney, dealing with bait-and-switch advertising. ... it looks like "bait and switch" is probably a stockbroker, plain and simple. ... he has to be an exterminator. ... bait and switch? he's a magician.
